Foristell Kitchen Remodel

This kitchen remodel in Foristell presented a few interesting challenges. The homeowners had already chosen all of their cabinetry, appliances and even ceramic tile that they found in a California showroom. They needed us to install everything.

They needed to keep the exact same island footprint because they did not want to replace the flooring and didn’t have enough extra pieces to patch anywhere.  As always, we were extremely careful removing all of the old components so that there was no damage to the floors, walls, or ceiling.

They had a half (cutoff) light switch right by the garage door which they wanted to somehow keep. The new cabinets went all the way to the edge of the wall, so we found dark brown switches and mounted switch coming out of the side of the cabinet instead.  The previous island had outlets on each end, but the new configuration inside the island had 3 layers of board that we had to get through to give them this feature again. But we did it and they were so happy.

When it came time to install their appliances, we discovered that venting system for the stove downdraft they had chosen did not actually fit vertically in the cabinet.  We were able to dismantle the venting system, turn the vent direction 90 degrees (as per the manufacturer’s instructions)  and then route new venting into the old exit using additional parts.

The last challenge had nothing to do with us, but we were able to provide them with some advice. The countertop installer they had chosen did not account for the downdraft behind their cooktop when they calculated the size of the hole.  When it was time to drop in the downdraft and cooktop, the hole was not quite large enough. Fortunately, the counter contractor came out quickly and spent a few hours hand-grinding the hole large enough. They dropped the cooktop in on the day before Thanksgiving!

The homeowners were prepared to ask us to install additional lighting as well, since the original kitchen cabinets had been beige, but the combination of the light quartz countertop and linen tile backsplash reflects enough light that the space feels just as bright as it did before.
